PROVENCE/ FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA

From the Massif of Ste Baume
to the Calanques of Cassis

Country: France

Area of Walk: Provence - Massif de la Sainte-Baume to Les Calanques de Cassis

Type of Holiday: Independent walking, between 4-6 hrs daily, from the Massif of Sainte Baume to the coast at Cassis with overnight stays in 2* hotels, with luggage transfer.

Brief description of tour: The tour starts in the Sainte-Baume range with distant views of the sea. It follows paths and trails designed to give you a real feel of this area, of peaceful provencal villages nestling in the stony, timeless sun-drenched hills, of the variety of scenery and flora and fauna for which the area is renowned. It incorporates the picturesque ports of Ciotat and Cassis, offering beautiful coastal scenery and idyllic places for bathing. The excellent standard ** Hotels and Logis de France used for this tour will enable you to discover the true provencal cuisine.

Description of the area: The whole region of Provence stretches from the river Rhone in the west 150 miles to Italy in the east, and for 100 miles from Serre Ponnon in the north to the islands of Hyeres in the Mediterranean. This tour starts around the Massif de la Sainte-Baume. This small range of limestone mountains stretches from east to west for 12 km and reaches a height of 1 147 m, at Signal des Béguines 20 km to the north of La Ciotat. The name Ste Baume derives from the Provencale “baoumo” meaning grotto or cavern and is indicative of the many caverns and caves with which the area is blessed.

Upon arrival at the coast you will encounter the stunningly beautiful ’Calanques’; most easily compared with the fjords of Norway. The Calanques provide fascinating scenery, being deep valleys submerged long ago by the startlingly blue Mediterranean causing the formation of dramatically sculpted white limestone cliffs. This area between Marseille and Cassis.is quite unlike any other seascape in Europe; the calanques being Karst valleys (geological term describing a particular kind of limestone geology - flat slabs of limestone with sink holes and solution cavities) formed at the beginning of the Quarternary Ice Age, some 1 to 2 million years ago.

The boat trip from Cassis towards the end of the tour is the very best way to view this wild landscape; Calanque En-Vau, Calanques of Port-Pin and Port-Miou. are particulary fine and should not be missed.

Climate

Provence obeys the rhythms of the Mediterranean climate, with seasons that change in abrupt succession. Sudden autumn rains end the panting heat of summer. Winters, particularly along the sheltered parts of the coast, tend to be mild. The year's most sustained rainfall occurs in spring, when the plant life explodes into growth, and the scent of resins and herbs fills the air.

Summer can be brutally hot in Provence. This is because, to put it in rather dramatic terms, this area is the most northerly perimeter of the Sahara Desert. Without the Mediterranean, that almost tide less and strongly salted inland sea, Provence would be literally Saharan. As hot air expands northward from the Sahara, crossing the sea, it reduces from its norm of six months without rain in Algeria to three months in Provence. This tropical air can collide with more frigid air coming from the Alps, resulting in occasional, but violent, downpours of summer. Sometimes, Africa's sirocco -- high, gusting winds carrying clouds of sand particles -- will refract the sun's rays to produce a landscape of intense yellow or purple. In winter, cold continental air pressing into Provence forces a retreat of the tropical air masses, while the warmth of the sea tempers the climate. Vegetation in Provence has adapted to this climate, in ways designed to retain moisture: small leaves, sometimes reduced to mere thorns; trees with thick and roughened bark.

Please Note

This route runs partly along the Mediterranean coast so early booking is essential to ensure availability at the hotels.
