Walking in Hidden Spain

The Principality of Asturias is one of the most beautiful yet least known areas of Spain, with a strong Celtic culture and traditions stretching back over 1000 years.

Map of Asturia

Snuggled between the high chalkstone summits of the Picos Europa and the white beaches of the Atlantic, this little known and explored part of ‘Green Spain’ has a unique and beautiful landscape quite unlike the traditional views of the country.

You will be walking in an area with snow capped mountains, rolling green hills and fertile valleys, picturesque villages and spectacular coastline with deep blue coves and sandy beaches. With its mild temperate climate wildflowers, mimosa and flowering orchards colour the landscape.

Your journey on foot takes you through a great variety of contrasting scenery, along the beautiful coastline of the clear Cantabrian Sea with secluded coves and beaches, through steep valleys with medieval farmhouses with’ horreos’, raised granaries on stilts, and luscious green hills and upland pastureland interspersed with views of the surrounding Massif, their high summits covered with snow until well into Spring

You stroll through aromatic apple orchards stopping for some local cider in quiet villages where time has stood still. Pre-Roman churches and ruins dotted along the way remind you of Austria’s role as the first Christian Kingdom in Spain and a safe haven for pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela. It was the only Spanish territory never conquered by the Moors, and Austria’s isolated location has ensured the ancient Celtic roots of this proud and independent area, its culture, traditions and music have remained relatively undisturbed.

Celtic Trails one-week walk covers a 65 mile stretch through some of the most varied parts of this beautiful area where no two days are the same. You stay in traditional country inns and farmhouses along the way enjoying good local food and wine.

You can extend your visit staying extra days along one of the picturesque fishing villages along the coast or in Oviedo, the interesting capital of the region.

Celtic Trails will take care of all the details of your walking holiday.
